Wait, “Orient”?

Does Lady Gaga seriously call Asian people “Orientals” in the “Born This Way” lyrics?

NO MATTER BLACK, WHITE OR BEIGE
CHOLA OR ORIENT MADE
I’M ON THE RIGHT TRACK BABY
I WAS BORN TO BE BRAVE

Is someone going to tell her that this is like referring to a black person as a “negro”?

Chola isn’t the best word to use either.

I get artistic liscence or whatever but damn it is an offensive word to use, she couldn’t have found anything else to use there? I get the idea saying everybody is special lets all hold hands and love eachother! but Orient is just a blatantly offensive word to use.

Doubt it. When people say “Oriental,” they tend to mean the Far East. Although, I mean, let’s say she was referring to Arabs — what does that change? “Oriental” is hardly considered an ‘appropriate’ term for Arabs.

Orient was used to mean the opposite of occidental, which meant superior. So Oriental was used to call people of the Far East inferior

I love how the Gaga fans are trying to flat out deny her racist slurs in her song about unity…and men in drag.
It’s so sweet how the think racist slang can just randomly change with a “positive” context.
I mean with certain terms you can turn around and use it if it applies to you (like Slut or N- or whatever) but if it doesn’t apply to you you have to no right to change the context and the meaning of the world and get it back.

I originally came to this site thinking I’d get some interesting insight in to why people might have some legitimate gripes about Lady Gaga. But really… this site is crap. Her appearances on 60 minutes and Leno have blown all of your ridiculous claims to waste. Her sincerity is a breath of fresh air compared to your silly ridicule.

Oriental people are insulted to find the US citizens teling them what to think about an innocent word to describe a particular style of culture.

The new insult is “American” and this word will be spread all over the world that US citizens find it demeaning. It means “stupid” (to them) and the rest of the world should not use it.

I have heard this several times now that “American” and “ignorant” mean the same thing commonly in eastern Asia countries.
