“Born This Way” to Open at #1; Smashes Records

Well, there you have it. In just three days, “Born This Way” registered over 450,000 downloads, smashing Britney Spears’ record (again) and is on-track to blast open Flo Rida and Ke$ha’s record for the biggest one-week sales tally. It will open at #1 on this week’s Billboard chart.

1) The song is still crap.

2) The fact that it’s the 1000th song to top the Hot 100 is an accident of time. It’s not an accomplishment of any sort, just a neat little number. It certainly has nothing to do with quality (or sales, although that record was broken on its own).

3) The question existing is: will this song have any longevity? The reception has been lukewarm and radio seems to be playing it simply because it’s Lady Gaga. Let’s see how it’s holding up in four weeks. Even with the Gaga Machine bulldozing everything in its path, the song’s mediocrity is apparent for everyone to hear.

That being said, this is what promotion will do. This era is shaping up more to be her Oops!…I Did It Again, not her Echo. And sane people will continue to wring their hands together.

there is some annoying station around here that seems to be playing it ‘just because its gaga’. it LITERALLY says crap like “are you little monsters gaga for gaga? Well so are we! So we won’t go 30 mintutes without playing a gaga song!”
and i’m like, arn’t you going to run out of songs? I feel like no-one wants to really listen to it, but it’s just so hyped stations feel obliged to play it. Lady gaga likes to say she “doesn’t care about numbers” but always seems so set on hyping, knowing it’s solely for $$$ and numbers, yet her ‘true monsters, who are all she cares about’ DON”T need hype, they will already know.
makes me ponder how well it would’ve done without hype. I personally don’t listen to pop stations much because they mostly play nothing I like, and I don’t mean that in an “pop music sucks so i’m cool”-way. I like some pop, but I don’t really want to hear rhianna, gaga, taoi cruz, shitty rnb and modern rap of today, beiber, black eyed peas, etcetc all day long. but for the past week anytime i’ve been in my friends car with her older sister listeneing to radio, they both changed it when gaga came on, and they are the kind of people who listen to ‘top 40’ (as lady gaga like to refer to them, as if her super-fans are on some deeper level of music)

    Can you please explain this:
“This era is shaping up more to be her Oops!…I Did It Again, not her Echo”.

I’m not getting what you mean by that.

Britney’s OIDIA solidified her status as *the* female pop star to watch; not just a flash-in-the-pan.

Leona Lewis’ Echo was something of a flop and was a major sophomore slump.

Re-reading that, it now seems obvious. I’m dumb.

There does seem sort of a backlash starting though. It seems people are starting to get annoyed by her. Did you see Justin Bieber’s reaction to her egg on Chelsea lately?
