Oh, Gaga…
Just when I was ready to grant Lady Gaga some goodwill — I love “Judas” and quite liked the Born This Way cover — here drops this interview, in which she comes across as not only delusional, but a bit unstable:
A bit of it does sound quite a lot like ‘Express Yourself’, though, doesn’t it?
“I don’t think… I swear to you. I am not stupid enough to put out a record and be that moronic.”
The reference seemed so obvious that it had to be intentional because, as you say, you’re not stupid…
“No. Listen to me. Why the fuck…? I’m a songwriter. I’ve written loads of music. Why would I try to put out a song and think I’m getting one over on everybody? That’s retarded. What a completely ridiculous thing to even question me about. I will look you in your eyes and tell you that I am not dumb enough or moronic enough to think that you are dumb enough or moronic enough not to see that I would have stolen a melody. If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression. It’s the same one that’s been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I’m the first fucking artist in 25 years to think of putting it on Top 40 radio, it doesn’t mean I’m a plagiarist, it means that I’m fucking smart. Sorry.”
The criticism did seem to take the wind out of the song’s sails.
“There’s a lot of people who want to see me fail. The minute they see something to shoot at, they shoot, and the bigger I become the bigger target I am. Nobody in this room at any point looked around and said ‘Oh my God, it’s ‘Express Yourself’. ‘ Not once. Listen. I swear to you. I can only be honest with you about it.”
What will people say about ‘Judas’?
“I dunno… I think they will really love it. (Starting to well up) I just don’t want my fans… I don’t know. This is exhausting. I just don’t wanna perpetuate that shit. I’m sure you want to address it but it’s just so ridiculous. I was just fucking shellshocked by it. It’s so funny to hear you say, ‘It must have been a homage’, I’m like, NO. When I homage, I fucking homage with a big sign saying I’ve done it. Why would I not do that now? (Sighs) I just like… I just have to say… (Starts crying) I feel like honestly that God sent me those lyrics and that melody. When you feel a message to give to the world and people are shooting arrows at it… there’s no way for something that pure to be wrong. (Reaches for Marilyn Monroe lighter) I need a cigarette.”
A few comments.
(1) It’s likely that nobody told her that it sounded like “Express Yourself” because of the kind of attitude she displayed here. She surrounds herself with sycophants who tell her how artistic, brilliant, beautiful and talented she is. Anyone accusing her of being anything other than a revolutionary renegade goddess is likely subject to verbal abuse. She is living in a fantasy world, and so far, she keeps the money rolling in. But she, like Britney Spears shortly into her career, is not surrounded by people who have her best interests at heart. If nobody told her that it sounded like “Express Yourself” — I mean, ‘Express Yourself’ was trending on Twitter on the day that “Born This Way” dropped — then her handlers are either profoundly ignorant of pop history (which is not good), or they are sycophantic yes-men who worship her every move. I’m betting on the latter, and that’s not good for her well-being.
(2) She says that God himself sent her the melody to “Judas.” I suppose that she does identify RedOne with God, given that he is the man behind her the hits that made her famous, such as “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “LoveGame,” and “Bad Romance.” Wait, I think she meant for “Born This Way.” Well, that’s even more embarrassing. But wait — I thought she said that her Little Monsters wrote the album? Now God did. Okay.
(3) The melody of the chorus of “Born This Way” is identical, note-for-note, to the bridge of “Express Yourself,” and the songs are in the same key. Whether she consciously sought to copy the song is one thing, but as an amateur songwriter, I can tell you that we are sometimes inspired by songs when we don’t even realize it. We listen to thousands of songs and what we process isn’t always what we recall at any given moment. But it’s incumbent upon you, when you realize you’ve copied someone, intentionally or not, to admit it and move on. Gaga, of course, cannot do this, because she is nuts.
(4) This woman is going to have a major breakdown within the next three years. She has demonstrated no signs of emotional stability. She’s consumed by her work, but that can’t keep up forever.
Overall? I’m getting worried for this woman’s stability.

Can you also mention her hypocrisy. She used the R-word, though many in society use the word it’s ignorant and wrong. They’re human beings and just like, if not worst than, saying “that’s so gay”. For someone who preaches about equality and inclusive she manages to alienate & degrade subcultures in the process. THE FAME has LITERALLY created a MONSTER!
Also, just like a lot that she does this will surpass many people and the media. Anyone who usually says that gets attacked and forced to apologize/retract the statement. Why must she be held in a totally different standard because it’s “art”, there’s only so much art can cover up. You can polish a turd, but it’s still a turd.
I agree with you and am getting sick and tired of everyone telling us she some sort of musical genius when she’s not. Just because she writes most of her songs and plays the piano doesn’t mean she’s good at it. Plus like the article says she has RedOne to thank for a lot of her initial success. And if you just read her lyrics there’s nothing deep or meaningful in them.
And yes the Fame has created a Monster who knows maybe that was the intention she is as manufacturer as a pop star can get. She claims not to be yet she does commericals for polariod and has product placement in her videos she’s full of crap.
to the argument of whether she consciously copied the song ot not, have you seen the VIDEO for Madonna’s express yourself? You might want to watch the video then go watch the alejandro video, and it becomes strikingly apparent she has listened/watched this song a lot.
and whilst on that topic, for things such as bad romance, I never fully watched the video, honestley because I don’t want it in my subconscious, but the screencaps looked strikingly similar to Roisin Murphy/Moloko(her old band)’s video for the song “indigo”. and then we see the two dogs in Roisin’s parralled (rather pointlessly?) in her videos for pokerface and such.
and in reply to the first comment, the fame has not created a monster, she has always been a monster. her ego is just harder to contain now because she thinks her tangible #1 singles make her ‘the best’, thus her proclamations as the best songwriter/singer (good singer, shit songwriter, sorry but reading her lyrics makes my face grimace in the absurdity of her forced edgyness and psuedo-intellectualism, and just overral lack of songwriting talent. there is a difference between being a taleneted songwriter and being a talented ‘hitmaker.’ just because its catchy doesn’t mean its good)

oh so GOD made the music to born this way (the song)? oh, alright then, clear the records, shes free to go! wtf, gaga? and then before that you said “the only similarities are the chord progression. It’s the same one that’s been in disco music for the last 50 years.” how many excuses do you need to make for yourself? she seriously sounds like Vanilla Ice when he ripped off Queen/Bowie’s under pressure and tried to argue that the beat was different by one little part or something, whilst anyone with a brain can see that he was stretching it to try and cover his ass. the fact that her outfits and her music video to alejandro greatly resembled Madonna’s express yuorself video shows shes been doing some heavy listening.
to me, all this just adds to the fact of how stupid her pretentious claims are that the artist doesn’t get enough credit. she went rambling on in an interview one day about how everyone things the artist doesn’t do any work and is just the face of a song to market it, and how people “like her” should get more credit, all whilst all her songs mentions shitloads of ‘coproducded, co-written,..etc”. i can look in my CD for Thriller25 or off the wall and see MJ was VERY involved in his work. and plenty of modern bands are ,too, such as the arcade fie. and all the old bands like Cameo, Slave, james brown, lyn collins(but less because she was a women in the 60s) all reeked talent and truly ‘MADE’ music, not these BS ‘i’m so hardcore look at me’ crap lady gaga does. Like someone said one youtbue once comparing her to Roisin, gaga sounds like reguritated 90s hosue techno, Roisin sounds like a revolutionizing creative artist.

She’s been crazy for awhile, I think her breakdowns are going to be worst then Britney’s were, she’s so much more doomed to failure because she’s put up so much further then Britney ever was in general.
I’m not suprised she throws hissy fits when people point out her failings, just like her fans! She’s just mad with power and pissed not everybody’s on her team!

I think you have something backwards here Alex. I think she surrounds herself with all of the people that are actually creating the shit that she sells. I don’t think more than a soupcon of this stuff is generated from her at all. She is completely non-charismatic, tonally ignorant and without any sort of personal creativity.
It isn’t her. It’s them.
